Fall has its own look, smell and even taste. There are many festivals in the Pocono Mountains that capture the essence of the season, but we’ve come up with a list of our top five. 1. Narrowsburg Logging Day
October 5
The community of Narrowsburg, NY is going back to its roots in a celebration of its heritage for Logging Day. Watch competitors in the New York State Lumberjack Association Lumberjack Contest vie for the title in 10 separate events. The day will also feature a vendor market, musical performances, a baking contest, beard and mustache contest, a kids’ activities area and educational lectures related to wood and forests plus plenty of food.
2. Peace, Love and Pumpkins, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts
October 11 – 27
During this walk-thru experience, guests will wind through the garden trails of beautiful Bethel Woods, highlighting thousands of unique hand-carved jack-o-lanterns and glowing displays of themed pumpkin art. Delight in displays featuring Woodstock festival icons, dinosaurs, mermaids, witches and much more!
3. Hawley Harvest Hoedown & Oktoberfest, throughout Hawley
October 5-6
This quintessential small-town festival is a staple of fall in the Lake Wallenpaupack region. Main Street and the surrounding side streets overflow with activities during Hawley Harvest Hoedown. There are food and craft vendors, a petting zoo, horse-drawn hayrides, street performers and a scarecrow parade. Other festivities include glass demonstrations, face painting and games for every age. Oktoberfest at Vault 240 offers all the flavors of a traditional German celebration. There will be a biergarten, plenty of food and live music.
4. 50th Annual Harvest Festival,
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm
October 12-13
It’s easy to imagine the life and times of the Pocono Mountains earliest settlers at this preserved 19th century working farm. The 50th Annual Harvest Festival celebrates heritage crafts and traditional skills of the day. Visitors can watch demonstrations of weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket weaving and candle making. There’s also plenty of folk entertainment, homemade country food, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, pony rides and horse drawn wagon rides.
5. Harvest & Heritage Days, Downtown Honesdale
October 12-13
Harvest and Heritage Days has everything you expect from a fall festival. Pumpkins, hay bales, cornstalks and scarecrows set the scene. Craft vendors fill Main Street with handmade specialties. A Farmer’s Market offers a bounty of fresh, local food items. Children can paint pumpkins and join in other fun activities. Saturday evening brings an antique car cruise boasting over 75 vehicles. A DJ will spin classic tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Pets on Parade on Sunday is always a crowd favorite. The costume competition has contestants parading down Main Street with judging at the Fred Miller Pavilion. Stroll the picturesque downtown, enjoy a variety of craft and specialty food vendors and embrace the feeling of fall.
