Main Street Mural Has Hawley Mooving

There’s a new face in town. A colorful mural on the side of the AM Skier Insurance building greets visitors traveling east on Main Street in Hawley. Titled “Moo,” the giant work of art boasts the face of a friendly cow. The installation is the first in a series designed to promote the arts within the community.

Celebrate

AM Skier launched the initiative in conjunction with its 99th year in business and as a token of appreciation to local artists. The insurance company partnered with the Wayne County Arts Alliance to issue a call for artwork. Nearly 250 submissions were received. A panel of judges reviewed all of the entries. Damascus, PA resident Ula Nero created the winning piece. She drew inspiration for the pastoral scene from the dairy farms surrounding her home. Nero’s artistic style is bright and textural. She has an affinity for painting funky animal portraits and loose, vivid landscapes.

Inspire

Measuring 14 by 18 feet, “Moo” is hard to miss. The mural  welcomes travelers along Main Street. If all goes according to plan, other Hawley businesses will soon sponsor murals. The quantity and quality of submissions also spawned the concept of a seasonal outdoor art gallery. Harmony in the Woods, a new performing arts site in Hawley, will incorporate the display. The murals will hang around the terraced seating area in the trees.
